The area is well-known for its production of wines. Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Biserno , Guado al Tasso and Camarcanda are a just a few of the renowned and prestigious wine cellars around Bolgheri. These are a short distance from the Castle and it is possible to organize visits and wine tastings with most of these labels.
The area is also famous for its olive oil and local products, for its cuisine and many very good restaurants. Being in the heart of both a hunting territory and also close to the sea, game and fish feature a lot in the local cuisine. Two very prestigious restaurants nearby are the michelin star Gambero Rosso restaurant in San Vincenzo and for the best fish and seafood La Pineta in Marina di Bibbona.
If in search of a Spa, The Tombolo Hotel in Marina di Castagneto offers magnificent talassotherapy pools and various different massages and beauty treatments. In the same village, one can also access the Castagneto Campastrello Sport, a sport centre with Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis and volleyball fields and a football pitch.
There are four golf clubs in the area: one in beautiful Punta Ala (18 holes), one in Gavorrano (both about 50 minutes away) and two in Tirrenia (9 holes and 18 holes) nearby Pisa and the sea.
The surrounding area is ideal for bicycle tours. In fact, many teams and big champions come to practice in the area. In the local coastal village, Donoratico, you can even find a very famous and well-stocked bicycle shop!
The area has many picturesque small villages one can visit as well stunning larger towns famous for their artistic heritage, such as Massa Marittima, Volterra, Pisa. Daily excursions are possible to Elba and the other nearby islands facing the Tuscan Coast at the port of Baratti next to the Etruscan Tumbs.
