The della Gherardesca Castle was built in the year 1000; it stands on the hill of Castagneto Carducci, the town so dear to the namesake Italian poet.
Enclosed within its medial wall, where the family’s church is also found, the Castle appears regal and impregnable. The present structure has been built throughout different centuries as it’s been following the history of the della Gherardesca family that still owns the Castle nowadays.
The church of San Lorenzo was built in the Middle Ages, around mid 1200 AD, and it has definitely been revolutionized since the last restoration in 1926 at the request of Count Walfredo della Gherardesca; it is placed aside of the belfry, built in a mediaval style between 1929 and 1931 by Count Walfredo with stones from the ruins of the Castle of Donoratico.
The frescoes, inserted in the ‘900, belong to the artist Alberto Zardo and follow an iconographic program that celebrates the glories of the della Gherardesca family.
On the walls are located the gardens and the walkways that give access to these. On clear days the view is precious: from the terrace placed on the west side of the Castle one can see the islands of Elba, Corsica, Capraia and Gorgona.
The Counts of della Gherardesca has been lords of a long stretch of the Tuscan coast for immemorial time.
